Raksha Bandhan everyone!
Originating from the Sanskrit term ‘रक्षाबन्धनम्,’ raksha means ‘protection’ and bandhan refers
to a ‘bond’ – the term simply translates to a ‘bond of protection’.
The annual festival celebrated in India, Nepal, and other
parts of the Indian subcontinent is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu
Lunar Calendar month of Shraavana, and the Gregorian calendar month of August.
It is
said that the Raksha Bandhan was a ritual followed by Lord Yama (the Lord of
Death) and his sister Yamuna. Yamuna tied Rakhi to Yama and bestowed immortality.
Yama was so moved by the serenity of the occasion that he declared that whoever
gets a Rakhi tied and promised to protect their sister will also become
immortal.
