Mohit and Mudita could not contain their anger. “Mum is so unfair! She is giving a free pass to Sumit for everything. He did not even finish his meal or cleaned up after himself.”, said Mudita. “We would surely have gotten a sound scolding for that!”, said Mohit in utter disbelief. Mohit and Mudita had a house guest, Sumit. He was the same age as Mudita and a little older than Mohit. They thought of him as very quiet and not very friendly.

They decided to go to mum and speak to her about this gross injustice. “We have to talk to mum. The house rules need to be the same for everyone or we will also not follow them!”, decided the two of them. “Don’t you think mum will get angry with us”, said a scared Mohit. “Leave the talking to me, little one. You have nothing to worry about. We are not being unfair”, said Mudita.

“Oh M²! I had no idea you both felt this way (mum fondly called them M²). Imagine children if for some reason you had to go live in someone’s house for some time without your parents. How will you feel? Sumit is feeling alone and he misses his parents a lot. How about we show him some kindness and make him feel at home first before dictating all the rules to him. Why don’t we try and offer him our hand of friendship first and see if it makes a difference”, said mum.

The two scurried off to their room after listening to mum. They had realized their mistake. They collected some of their toys and went to Sumit’s room. “Hi Sumit Bhaiya, we are going to play in the park. Would you like to come with us?”, said Mudita. “No guys, thank you but I don’t feel like playing at the moment.”, said Sumit. “Please Bhaiya, we would really like to play with you!”, said Mohit and he made such a cute face that Sumit couldn’t help but smile. “All right! Let’s go.” And the three ran to the park. Mohit and Mudita realized that Sumit was a lot of fun to play with.
