Mandi: A place where agricultural produce is bought and sold. The farmers bring their crop to a mandi to sell. From there, wholesalers buy the produce and take it to the nearby city/town to sell at the wholesale mandi of that city or town. From the city/town mandi, vegetable and fruit sellers buy the produce and sell it to us. This is how crops travel from the field to the plate.

Kharif and Rabi: India has two cropping seasons. Rabi is the main season. Rabi is sown in October, after harvesting the Kharif crop, and harvested in April. That is why the major harvest festivals are celebrated in April. After the Rabi crop is harvested, the farmers sow the Kharif crop in April, and harvest it in September-October. Halloween, which is a harvest festival too, coincidentally falls just as our Kharif crops are being harvested.
