Once, Guru Nanak reached a village. The people of the village offered him no hospitality, nor words of kindness. Guru Nanak and his disciples spent the night under a tree. The following morning, while leaving the village, the Guru turned around and Blessed the village - "Vasse Raho." (May your homes be always inhabited).
The next night, coincidentally, they rested at a village where they were welcomed very warmly and taken care of. While leaving that village, however, the Guru turned around and said to the people gathered to bid him farewell, "Ujjad Jao" (May you lose your homes and be displaced).
This left his disciples bewildered and they asked him the reason for these unreasonable farewell blessings to both villages.
Guruji replied: The good ones, will take their goodness wherever they go. We need people like this to reach all corners of the world and seed goodness there. The unkind ones are best contained in a single place."
एक बार, गुरु नानक देव जी बाला और मरदाना के साथ एक गाँव में पहुंचे। उन्हें बाहर से आया हुआ जान कर भी, गाँव वालों ने गुरूजी को पानी तक नहीं पूछा। तीनों ने रात एक पेड़ के नीचे काटी। सुबह जब वे गाँव से निकलने लगे, तो गाँव की सरहद पर आ कर गुरूजी गाँव की ओर मुड़े और गाँव को आशीर्वाद दिया " बसे रहो."
संयोग से, अगले दिन गुरूजी जिस गाँव में ठहरे, वहां के लोग बहुत ही सज्जन थे. उन्होंने गुरूजी की आव भगत और सेवा की. अगली सुबह सब लोग गंव की सीमा तक गुरूजी को छोड़ने आये. गुरूजी ने सीमा पर पहुँच कर गाँव वालों को आशीर्वाद दिया, "उजड़ जाओ". मरदाने से रहा नहीं गया. उसने गुरूजी से पूछा, " गरुजी, ये क्या कौतुक है?" गुरूजी बोले, "मरदाने, ये जो नेक लोग हैं, ये अपनी नेकी पूरी दुनिया में ले जायेंगे. ये उजड़ेंगे, तो दुनिया में जगह जगह नेकी के बीज बनके पड़ेंगे. वो जो गाँव है, उसकी बदी और स्वार्थ दुनिया में ना ही फैले तो अच्छा है. इसी लिए मैंने उन्हें बसे रहने का आशीर्वाद दिया।"
