The Children's Post - 28th November 2019

Hello, my dear readers!

Today's lead news is about a new Bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha today. The second piece of news is about India getting a part of its treasure back. Even if I say so myself, I think it is a very nice gesture by Australia. In trying to write this story, I became aware of so much related to the transfer of antiques between countries, and other interesting things.

Page 2 has Sanskrit and Hindi Muhavara quiz, of course, but today's muhavara is very funny. Because we have not given you the meaning. And you will not find the meaning in any dictionary. There is only one way to find the meaning of this muhavara. And that is to ask your family members - especially the elders in your family.

There is your favourite Word Magic, Tamil proverb by Vanitha aunty (and I love her Tamil proverbs so much. Each one is so deep!) , and as usual, that puzzle that forces your brain to do the heavy lifting. Hope you have as much fun solving the puzzle as I had making it!

Page 3 has the most beautiful Letter to the Editor - it is from Omar, a young reader who lives in Jeddah. All of us in the Editorial team were so touched after reading his letter. Please do read it! We also take you forward on that journey of Microbiology as a career, and there is a lovely update on the Cartosat 3 launch.

Page 4 has a lovely story from the Chandamama Fan Club.

Page 5 has the Sports News, Ayush Moitra's very funny Bob Mania, and Ishaan Kaila's Laugh-a-lot-it-is. The Kavita Kona today has a poem on the letter उ .

Enjoy the edition, little stars, and send us a letter to the editor real soon!

Love,

Nidhi aunty

What is a Bill, and when does it become a law?

In India, a Bill is a proposed law.

How does a Bill become a law?

It has to be passed by the Lok Sabha, then the Rajya Sabha, and then confirmed by the President, before it becomes a law.

What is an Act?
In most countries, a Bill, once it becomes a law, is called an Act.

What is the difference between a proposed law (Bill) and a law?
A proposed law is something that someone wants to make into a law. It does not have to be followed by the citizens until it becomes a law. Every country has wise people who discuss all such proposals and then decide whether the proposal should become a law or not. Once the Bill clears the entire process, it becomes a law. Then, all of us must follow it.

And in our inbox today, we got this very touching email from Omar:
Respected Editor Nidhi,
My father advised me to pen my views about “The Children’s Post of India” to you.
My name is Mohammad Omar Malik. I was born in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am 11 years old. I am a student of grade VI studying at Thamar International School in Jeddah. I am an Indian.
My father used to boost me to read newspaper daily. It started with a local daily newspaper “Arab News”. Sometimes I read sieved piece of news from “The Times of India” or “The Telegraph”. My experience of TTIS of The Telegraph is also not encouraging. At last one evening he came back home with The Children’s Post of India. He said that the solution of everything is google.
Now I get a color printout of The Children Post of India on my study table every day. I read it every day. I find it interesting. I find myself interested in talking about current affairs with others. It helped me in the interview for admission in Doon School. I was interviewed in a group of three students. We were shown few photos. We have to interpret what the pictures meant. A few were related to current affairs. I got at once because I have read this in The Children’s Post of India.
Every Thursday it reminds me about my annual holidays in India. The lines in Devanagari reminds me of all those afternoon efforts that I made in learning to read and write Hindi.
Last but not least I really enjoy solving riddles, Sudoku’s and the Mazes.
 Regards
Omar

The Children's Post, 26th Nov 2019

Hello Readers,

Do you know what day it is today? Let me give you a hint. It is the day that celebrates the supreme law of India. The same supreme law that gives us our fundamental rights and tells us our fundamental duties among many other things.

Did you get it?

Its Bhartiya Samvidhan Diwas or the Indian Constitution Day.

It is the day to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. It was adopted on 26th November 1949 and it came into effect on 26th January 1950. It was declared as the Constitution Day in Oct 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while laying the foundation stone of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue of Equality in Mumbai. Earlier this day was observed as the Indian Law Day.

What is the Constitution of India: Every country has its constitution. It is the framework of political codes, power and duties of government institutions, and fundamental rights and duties of its citizens. It is the longest written Constitution of any country on Earth. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is known as the chief architect of our Constitution. Beohar Rammanohar Sinha illustrated the pages of the Constitution.

A glimpse of what's more inside:
Page 1: A business news from both France and the U.S. The biggest luxury brand company is acquiring a very famous diamond brand. The other piece of news is from the science field. A place is found on Earth which does not support life at all. Who knew this was possible.
Page 2: A wrong has been righted after many years by the Australian Government. The famous red rock, Mount Uluru, has finally been returned to its rightful owners and how.
Page 3: Read about the Constitution Day of India and learn a new way of coding your naughty pranks.
Page 4: Who clinched the Davis Cup title at Madrid? If you don't know then go to the final page. Read few more facts of the Constitution Day and understand the balance between privilege and responsibilities in the Junior Reading Room by Akanksha.

Enjoy the edition!

Why are the children not reading?

I pick up my son from school.
"So, What did you guys talk about today?"
"Oh the usual - teachers, Fortnite, who did what, holidays, playdates, etc."
"Did you guys not talk about ?"
"No mom.. no one talks about stuff like that. No one even knows about stuff like that."
I work on a simple objective - raising aware citizens. The kind of citizens who think before they react, and listen before they speak, and are in touch with the world around them in a way that goes beyond propaganda and causes, and is aware of the interconnectedness of all things.
The first step in that journey is to put a newspaper in the hands of a child. In a way that they understand. We did that 2.5 years ago, and have been doing that every single day ever since.
But now, I have hit the second hurdle. For the news reading to be effective, it has to be shared and discussed. Views have to be exchanged. Counter views heard.
So, why are children not discussing the news among themselves?

The Children's Post - 23rd November 2019

Dear Readers,

As each day unfolds, it is one of discovery. Today news covers how scientists in Japan have discovered geoglyphs in Peru dating back thousands of years using the modern technology of Artificial Intelligence. Also, a town in Australia looked like Mars as it was covered in red dust because of the dust storm caused by high temperatures and speed of winds.
On page 2, Kraft with Kalpana will tell you how to make a caterpillar. It is simple to make, and you will probably have all that you need to make it at home. Praneeth will tell you all about Haiti in the Countries of the World.
Page 3 has some puzzles to puzzle you. Also, Mr. Owl will tell you why your favourite foods taste so good. Rack your brains to unscramble Word Magic and inspired by the Quote of the Day.
Page 4 has the sports news, artwork by Ridhi Gudla, and a Riddle to make you Giggle. Aditya Nema is witty as ever in Cool Comix.
I’m sure you will enjoy today’s edition!

Hindi Muhavara Quiz

आजकल किसी को शर्म ही नहीं आती. सब की _____________   मर गया है.

अ. छठी का दूध
आ. आँख का पानी
इ. आँख का तारा
ई. हाथ का मैल

Explained for children: What are bad debts and non performing assets

Once upon a time, Ram gave Shyam 100 rs. But a few days later, Shyam lost all his possessions. Obviously, Ram cannot get his money back now. The debt that Ram has given to Shyam is a bad debt for him now.

Suppose the same thing happens to a bank? A bank named ABC Bank gave 10 loans to 10 people. Out of these 10, 2 cannot pay back. The money given to these 2 is called NPAs or Non-Performing Assets. So, basically, bad debts of a bank are called Non-Performing Assets.

Sanctions explanation for children.

Sanctions: When a powerful country issues an order to stop trade with another country, and convinces
others also to do the same, that is called ‘sanctions’.

Sanskrit Sukti on the importance of the right company

संसर्गजा दोषगुणा भवन्ति
SansargaJaa DoshguNaa Bhavanti

Meaning: Both virtue and vice, are born from the company one keeps.

Hindi Muhavara on bad debts

अटका बनिया सौदा दे
Atka Baniya Sauda de

Meaning: A grocer who has given supplies on credit to a customer has to keep giving credit to realise his money. A lender who has a bad debt has to anyway keep the borrower entertained to get at least some money back.

The Children's Post, 19th November 2019

Hello Readers,

Do you know India has 5 different Martyr’s Day? A Martyr is a person who laid down his/her life in the service of his/her country. The birthday of Rani Lakshmi Bai, 19th November 1828, is celebrated as the Martyr’s Day in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She was the queen of Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi. This day also honours all the ‘veer senani’ who fought the East India company in the ‘rebellion of 1857’ of which she was a prominent figure. Will keep informing you of the other Martyr’s Day as and when they fall.

Today is also World’s Toilet Day. This day was founded in 2001 and was integrated as an official UN day in 2012. It focuses on raising awareness about public sanitation and aims to end open defecation in the world. UN-Water manages the website of this day and creates special themes for each year. This year’s theme is ‘Leave No One Behind’.

Coming on to a very exciting day! Did you know it was Mickey Mouse’s birthday on 18th November? Our beloved little mouse turned 90 yesterday. 90 years! Do you what this means? It means that Mickey Mouse has been bringing smile to people’s faces since our grandparents (or your great-grandparents) were children. Here’s wishing Mickey Mouse infinity more years of spreading giggles and fun.

Page 1: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi retired and paved way for India 47th CJI SA Bobde. Read more on this on page 1. Continue reading to understand an important step taken by Facebook and why is it so important.

Page 2: Worrying about the deteriorating air quality of our country's  capital - the feature 'Why is Delhi a Dustbowl' will make you understand the reason behind it.

Page 3: How was the last lesson on coding and decoding. Learn a new one today.

Page 4: Read the recent update from Formula 1, answer the trivia question on birthday boy, Mickey Mouse, and savour the very hopeful and optimistic poem on 'India of my Dreams' by 'Tiaara'.
