Why are the children not reading?

I pick up my son from school.
"So, What did you guys talk about today?"
"Oh the usual - teachers, Fortnite, who did what, holidays, playdates, etc."
"Did you guys not talk about ?"
"No mom.. no one talks about stuff like that. No one even knows about stuff like that."
I work on a simple objective - raising aware citizens. The kind of citizens who think before they react, and listen before they speak, and are in touch with the world around them in a way that goes beyond propaganda and causes, and is aware of the interconnectedness of all things.
The first step in that journey is to put a newspaper in the hands of a child. In a way that they understand. We did that 2.5 years ago, and have been doing that every single day ever since.
But now, I have hit the second hurdle. For the news reading to be effective, it has to be shared and discussed. Views have to be exchanged. Counter views heard.
So, why are children not discussing the news among themselves?
