Sanskrit and Hindi proverb

काले फलन्ति तीर्थानि , सद्य साधुसमागम:

The good results of a pilgrimage are received at some time in the future, but the good result of the company of good men, can be felt immediately.


अंधेर नगरी, चौपट राजा,
टके सेर भाजी, टके सेर खाजा!


Andher Nagri, Chaupat Raja,
Take Ser Bhaji, Take Ser Khaja!


The proverb comes from an old folk tale. It is used to denote an administration where there is no meritocracy.


Usage: इस प्रदेश में अनाज पर भी उतना ही कर लगता है, जितना महंगे आभूषणों पर. गरीब भी उतना ही पिसे , जितना साहूकार। अंधेर नगरी, चौपट राजा!
