The Children's Post, 28th December 2021

Dear Readers,

Have you ever thought about how quickly we cover the distance between December and January? On one night we are wise with the experience of an entire year with us and just the next morning we find ourselves dewy-eyed, looking forward to the new beginnings that the new year promises. And how we welcome the new year! Every country, religion, and family have their own customs e.g., in Columbia people carry empty suitcases around the block, while in Spain people eat 12 grapes (and not one over or under) to celebrate the new year. Remember to not stand around windowsills in Denmark as its customary to throw plates and glasses out their windows to ward off bad spirits.

In my family we start to tell each other jokes right around midnight. The idea is to enter the new year laughing our hearts out and hopefully continuing through the entire year. I wish the same for all the beautiful souls reading this as it’s that time of the year again. The time to make new promises, to bring new hopes, and to see some new dreams. To give second chances and make fresh starts and to plan new adventures and make fresh memories. Such an exciting time!

Enjoy the edition!

The Children's Post, 21st December 2021

Dear Readers,

While glancing through the newspaper my eyes rested on an opinion piece called ‘If you got it flaunt it, if you use it, you lose it’ by a famous columnist. Now, this article was talking about pure economics, but it took me to my childhood where it proved quite instrumental in dealing with societal pressures. The societal pressure that I am talking about is – showing off candies. I was such a show-off as a kid. I would save all my candies in a box and never eat them, just so that I can flaunt it in front of my friends.

There is an economic term called ‘conspicuous non consumption’ which means that you deliberately do not consume a product to prove a point. I deliberately refused to eat my candies to make my friends envious of my collection. But there was a catch 22 situation here. (Catch 22 means a seemingly impossible situation e.g., chicken and egg problem – If you say that chicken came first - where did it come from? And if you suggest that the egg came first - who laid the egg?) My problem was that if I eat all my candy, I will not have a collection to flaunt anymore. But this also keeps me away from candy which I really want to eat because they are super tasty. Decisions! Decisions! It made my life very hard. I would spend every waking hour thinking of my candies. It took my entire will power to not eat them. I was too proud of my stash.

While proudly exhibiting it in front of my friends, I overlooked an impending threat, which led to my downfall. I missed that danger is always lurking in the shadows. After all, history has taught us that a kingdom’s downfall always starts from home. Be it an envious stepmother or a greedy brother, one should always access threat from within. By the time I remembered this valuable lesson, my sister had already eaten half of my stash.

The Children's Post, 14th December 2021

 Dear Readers,

While writing about the trees of the Gods, I began to think of another kind of tree, a magical tree, which you must be familiar with. Any guesses? Yes, I am talking about Jack’s Beanstalk. The magical tree that reached the sky.

Have you ever thought about what the beanstalk might have looked like? Was it a thin creeper, or a strong sturdy tree? Did it have branches that could take you to different cities or did its stem bend to circle the earth before it reached the sky? Were the leaves big enough to cover all the oceans? Was there an entirely different world living on the tree, on its branches, in various kinds of tree houses. How would the beings travel from one tree house to another? Did they have a special flower vehicle or did they use leaves to fly. What kind of dresses would they wear, made of flower petals, leaves, or bark?

Don’t you want to live in a magical world like that. Would you believe me if I tell you that you can? All you need is a sunny day and plenty of imagination. Dream your dream and then bring it to life in your medium of expression. Let it be in the form of a poem, story, drawing, etc. and share it with us. We would love to feature it.

Unleash your wonderful imagination!

Enjoy the edition!

The Children's Post, 7th December 2021

 Dear Readers,

The winter sun brings out strong nostalgic feelings in all of us. Something about the warmth of the sun makes us want to go back to our happy place, back to those evocative memories which lie hidden in the back of our mind only to surface when exposed to the balmy sun. One such memory which always visits me at the start of winter is eating roasted peanuts with my parents, huddled in one single rajai and ceaselessly yapping. It never occurred to us to take a separate rajai! The idea of huddling in one made the essence of our winter.

There is something about the winter sun

That brings about a nostalgic return

Of memories fun

Of yearnings on run

‘Snap Out’ you say - it’s easier said than done!

The balmy sun invites my kind

And makes evocative memories remind

Of magical castles of mind

Of worries left behind

‘Snap Out’ you say - ‘Why’ I whined!

The lazy sun is winter’s jewel so fine

It’s happy and cheerful, I opine

Of comfort of the flowing sunshine

Of beaming rays along the coastline

‘Snap Out’ you say - ‘it’s my turn’ you whine!

What is your winter memory, the one that leaves you with a smile no matter where you are?
