The Children's Post, 31st August 2021

Dear Readers,

There was a fault in our electricity line yesterday, so we were without electricity for most of the day. As the sun began to set, our hearts began to sink. What if the inverter runs out of charge? How will we sleep? In order to survive the night we had to think on a war-footing. We switched off all the electrical devices and did the unthinkable – climbed up the stairs with chairs, food, toys, and rugs. We have a big terrace with grass and a sitting deck. Kids wanted to set up a little picnic area, so we unrolled the rugs, and spread their toys for them to have fun. We also curated a food hamper, remembering to put everyone’s favourite delights. Thankfully, the crescent moon was glowing enough for us to see if we were eating the right thing. My mother found her friend doing the power walk on the next terrace. It was such a different feeling to see people on their terraces, it almost felt like a little get together. Soon, everyone started to talk across the terrace. Our children found it very amusing. Suddenly, someone started to hum a song. It was a catchy little tune and everyone joined him in a matter of minutes. And right when we were starting to really enjoy ourselves, my daughter shouted, “light aa gai”. But instead of a cheerful ‘Yay’, a disappointed ‘noooo’ filled the air!

The Children's Post, 24th Aug 2021

Dear Readers,

Necessity is the mother of new customs. I should know, I have made new ones for almost every festival. My mother taught me that if old customs make you feel left out then make your own customs to suit your needs.

Once I felt really sad on Rakshabandhan. As I have two sisters I felt as if we will miss the fun of this festival. My mother made all three of us tie rakhi to each other and made us promise that we will always protect each other. I liked the new tradition.

My parents visit all of their friend’s place on Diwali and this leaves them very tired. So we decided to order food and start a new tradition. Now our Diwali’s are incomplete without pizzas.

My daughter loves Christmas and waits for our very own Santa Claus every year. She feels that every time he resembles a different family member. But rather than feeling suspicious, she feels immensely happy that Santa takes the trouble to make her feel comfortable as she might get uncomfortable with a stranger. This is the newest custom that we have included in our lives.

I can say one thing for sure, the new customs certainly make our lives enriched. One day our new customs will become a part of our heritage and our future generations won’t know the difference. Interesting! (devilish smile)

 Hello kids,

Have you ever gone on a geocaching trip? It is sort of like a treasure hunt, but here the ‘hunters’ use GPS-enabled devices to locate a geocache. The point of geocaching is exploring the outdoors, understanding how GPS devices work, and having fun!

The third Saturday of August is International Geocaching Day! Have a nice weekend!!!

The Children's Post, 17th Aug 2021

Dear Readers,

Growing up in a catholic school we used to sing hymns all the time. There was one that was our nun’s favourite - showers of blessings. At that time I would not understand their sentiment behind it. Why do I need to be so grateful for sunlight, food, or home. Isn’t it the very basic need of life. Why will we ever not have it?

Then one day the polluted air in Delhi covered the skies and I realised that warm and comforting sunlight was in fact a blessing.

One day the water supply got interrupted in our city and there was no water to take a shower or cook food and I realised that cooked food and water is also a blessing.

I remember one day when we sat at the railway station for hours. My father had just gotten transferred to a different city and there was some confusion with the quarters assigned to us. There was no place for us to go except the waiting room where we waited for hours. That day we realised that a home is certainly a blessing.

And since that day I have counted my blessings every day.

The Children's Post, 10th Aug 2021

 Dear Readers,

The world is not divided between good and bad people, it’s divided between emotional and hard core people. I fall in the first category, I am not just emotional - I cry at the drop of the hat.

You must have guessed by now where this story is headed. So after the exhilarating win of Neeraj Chopra in the javelin throw final, we all broke into celebrations. I was quite proud of myself that I didn’t get emotional. While scooping out ice cream for everyone, I started reminiscing how I conceal my untimely tears in social gathering. What is the most common place where people cannot stop their tears - Yes! Movie hall. I never walk into a movie hall without tissues. I have learnt a few tricks of how not to let other people know that you are shedding copious amounts of tears - eat while crying, the chomping noise of eating popcorn is so irritating that people do not notice your sob.

One time it got very difficult for me to conceal my sobs; it was when I went to watch the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with my sister. I have mentioned once before that we laugh in sync. Well as it turns out, we even cry in sync- so the cumulative effect of our sobs turned out quite intense. People sitting next to us offered us tissues and consoled us. We consoled them as they were crying too. It was quite beautiful.

Coming back to the moment, as I took the ice cream tray out, Neeraj Chopra was graciously accepting the medal and we all stood for the national anthem. We had waited for this moment since the start of the Olympics. I started singing the national anthem when I felt a knot in my throat. My eyes too brimmed up and I lost control of my voice box. I could no longer sing as I realized that I was sobbing. Everyone was singing and so far nobody had noticed me, I hoped to escape everyone’s notice when my daughter cried - Mum, are you crying? And that was it. All the cameras were out in a second to make sure I never lived down the moment.

The Children's Post, 3rd August 2021

 Dear Readers,

Are you watching the Olympics? Are you happy? Well, let me tell you something – I am furious! No, it’s not the winning and losing that annoys me. It’s the elusive timing of the crucial moments that leaves me in a fit of pique.

I love watching the hockey match, everything about it is enjoyable – the national anthem at the start, the display of camaraderie by hitting the hockey sticks of the other team as a greeting gesture, the action-packed quarters, and the handshake between the two teams at the end.

What I do not like is that I would watch the whole match but miss all the important moments e.g., a goal would take place when I’ll get up to drink water. It makes me wonder if the players know I am not in the room to go for the goal. But these players don’t know who they are up against. This time, I am prepared. I made all the necessary arrangements before the start of the game, I had a water bottle beside me, my daughter was well fed, the doorbell was disconnected, and the phone was put on silent. We sat right on time to watch the match. Everything that could go wrong was taken care of. I was enjoying watching the match. It started to rain here, and the environment became beautiful. It felt like the perfect day. One of the team took the ball near the goal line, it was a perfect set up for a goal. I stood up in excitement and just when the players took the ball near the net – my tv started flashing a message that it had lost signal due to rain. I was devastated. I stomped my feet and yelled at the rain which I had welcomed just moments before. I think my yelling worked as the tv started working again. But guess what, the key moment was yet again elusive to me. I grit my teeth in anger as I saw the players jumping with joy.
