The Children's Post, 31st March 2020

Hello Readers,

Are you good with pronunciations? Should we put it to test? Alright

let’s start with an easy one – try pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. Yes! it is a real word and I did not make it up. It is the name of a little Welsh town in the Great Britain. Prepare to be amazed by the next sentence – It is not the biggest town name. But more on that in the next edition.

Let me help you with the pronunciation – it is pronounced as ‘llan-vire-pooll-guin-gill’. Fun right? Should we make it more exciting? Now let’s try pronouncing the name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll’s train station – Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Do notice there are 4 Ls together in the spelling. Don’t worry I am not going to hang you out to dry (psst: see the meaning below). It is pronounced as ‘llan-vire-pooll-guin-gill-go-ger-u-queern-drob-ooll-llandus-ilio-gogo-goch’.

Keep practising till you can say it really fast. Do send us your voice clip when you have practised enough.

Also celebrating our Tuesday Champions - Akshita & Atharva. Congratulations guys!

Enjoy the edition!

The Children's Post, 30th March 2020

Hello Lovely Readers,

Most of us would agree that playing games is one of the family's favorite ways to spend time together.  Instead of relying on the preset old games, it’s time to put our thinking caps on. This week, we are starting “make your own game challenge” for all our readers.
Since we all have limited resources at home, it would be interesting to see how innovative our ideas can be. With any theme and any type of game, share your innovative game ideas with us at tcpedit@gmail.com.

The lead news today is all about Mega-merger of 10 state-run banks which is going to come into force from April 1. The second news tells how access to ‘SWAYAM’, National Online Education Platform has tripled during the last one week.

Read interesting feature - Bird Watching - A great hobby, written by one of ours young avid readers Shivani Manivannan.

Learn Japanese lessons by Anupma Shukla along with the word magic on page 3. Enjoy a beautiful poem by Monica Goel Diwan and artist corner by Raunav Nanda along with an interesting puzzle on page 4.

Stock Index, Bull run, Bear Market, and Market Capitalisation

Stock Index
It is a way of measuring the performance of a group of stocks e.g. Nifty 50 tracks 50 companies listed in the stock exchange. If a stock index goes down, it means the weighted average price of the stocks in the index goes down.

Fall in the Share Market
A fall in the Share Market is recorded when the market capitalization of the exchange falls rapidly due to excessive selling. This is called a bear market.

Surge in the Share Market
Consider the exact opposite situation. That is called a bull run.

What is Market Capitalisation?
It is the value of the company being traded on the stock exchange. It is calculated by multiplying the
price of a share by total number of shares offered.
If a company has 100 shares, each valued at Rs. 5 – its market capitalization is Rs. 500.

Repo, Reverse Repo, and CRR

What is Repo Rate?
The rate at which banks borrow money from the RBI to meet their day to day obligations. If the repo rate is low, then banks can charge lower rates on the loans taken by us.

What is Reverse Repo Rate?
It is the rate of interest offered by RBI when banks deposit their surplus funds with the RBI. Banks earn interest on such funds.

What is CRR?
The percentage of cash required to be kept in reserves, vis-a-vis a bank's total deposits. Low CRR means more funds with banks for giving as loans.

The Good around us - The Children's Post, 29th March 2020

Dear Readers

The first page today is full of good news. In Hindi, we have a proverb that means that to attain its purest form, gold must go through fire. I think that is a little true of humanity today. In this time of a global crisis, the purest in each of us is coming out.

Trade Agreements, FTA and PTA

What is a Trade Agreement?
A Trade agreement is an arrangement between two or more nations agreeing on the terms of trade between them. They determine the tariffs and duties that countries impose on imports and exports.

What is a FTA?
India has signed Free Trade Agreements with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN countries), Sri Lanka, and Thailand which allow for liberal trade terms between the countries.

What is a PTA?
A Preferential Trade Agreement between India and its trading partner provides “right of entry” to certain products. This is done by reducing tariffs on an agreed number of products. India enjoys several PTAs with countries such as Bangladesh, China, South Korea, and Sri Lanka.

How is a FTA different from a PTA?
PTAs serve to reduce tariffs on products but not eliminate them while FTAs completely eliminate tariffs.

Hello Readers,
I am a Selenophile. No, I won’t tell you what it means. But I can tell you that looking at it makes me very happy. I can look at it all night long. Oops! have I said too much? Still, take out your dictionaries and have a go at it. It’s a beautiful word. And all you fellow selenophiles, please do write if you want to know more about it. So, that’s my answer to what makes me happy. What’s yours?
Do you think we are a happy country? When I look around me, I see happy and content people, but is that enough to determine a country’s standing in the world. Let me tell you a fact, India didn’t do too well in the Happiness Index 2020 which was released on 20thMarch. We stand at 144th position out of 153 countries. Where do you think we faulted? Eagerly looking forward to some insight on this so please do write your two bits.

Coronavirus Isolation - What to do?

Today, as you sit around the lunch table, we'll give you something to talk about.
The first thing one reads in any book of law is "Ignoratia Juris Non Excustat." - Ignorance of law is not an excuse for not following the law.
If the country expects each citizen to be aware of the law, why does the country not teach its citizens the law?
Discuss this with your family over lunch today, and share some thoughts with us - either here or at tcpedit@gmail.com

Coronavirus Isolation - What to do?

On the 16th of March, as we realised that more and more families across the world are going to be at home, we wanted to reach out and do something.

So, for the last 3 days, we have been posting 3-4 challenges that you can do as a family.

We are sharing those here, and will continue to post them here. Just look for the label "Coronavirus Isolation with TCP"
This, too, shall pass.

1. The Sandwich Challenge
Hellos! As suggested by Priyanka, let today's tea-time be driven by the kids.
Let's make sandwiches this evening, and post pics here.

2. The Button Challenge
Today, learn to sew a button. 2 holes or 4, doesn't matter.
And then, post a pic here!

3. Grandparents on the Grandstand
Talk to a grandparent, or someone that age, and ask them just 2 questions:
  1. What is the one thing that you used to do, which you miss the most?
  2. What is the one thing that you used to do as a child, but our generation has not even heard of?

4. Post Pictures Here
The Challenge today is to create an album with real pictures. If stationery stores around you are open, get a notebook with thick pages. Otherwise, use a notebook from home.
Take prints of pictures or use prints you already have. Work together to create an album of pictures. Each picture must have a caption and of course, simple details like date, where it was taken, the occasion, and who all are in it.
Post pictures here.

5. Corona Con Call
Today's Challenge:
A. Pretend that every member of the family is in a different state. For this, let each one go to a separate room, or at some distance from each other. Children can be with their grandparents but not with their parents.
B. Have a conference call where every member of the family is telling the others where they are and what they are doing. (All this has to be imaginary)
C. Do this by shouting to each other, and not using phones.
D. If you can make a video, share it here. Else, laugh alone.

6. The Challenge of the Books
Good Morning!
Today's Family Challenge is to read a book for 30 minutes without interruption.
Note: Drink water and visit the washroom before the challenge.
Steps:
The entire family starts to read together.
You get up as soon as you check your phone or look for a distraction.
The last person reading wins.
The challenge ends at 30 minutes. Everyone who has been able to read for 30 minutes wins.
Post pics of winners here!

7. The Cloth Clip Challenge
This idea is by Harinder aunty.
Use cloth or paper clips, and show us how many different things you can make using ONLY these.

8. The Rubik's Cube Challenge
Today's challenge is Rubik's Cube. Pick up one near you, and try to solve it.
If you dont know how to solve Rubik's cube, google the algorithm, and then try. Or just try as it is.
After 30 seconds, if no one in the family has solved the cube, the one with the funniest pattern on a side wins.
Don't forget to share the winning image!

9. The Traffic Rules Challenge
Having two driving licences is an offence in India. True/False?

10. The Super Yoga Challenge
Good Morning! Some of you are now probably isolated as a family. Many countries have effected a lockdown, and some states in India also have limited public movement big time. So from now on, we will do our challenges as a family.
Theme for today: Super Brain Yoga.
How many reps can you do?

PS: There is a reason that we chose this as the first family exercise.

11. The Law Challenge
This activity is from Minal's idea - Cultures across the world.
Today, find out about ONE strange law and mention it here with the country.
Go!

12. The Yoga Challenge
Today's assignment: Do any 2 Yoga asanas - either on your own, or from Dimple Tanna's Sunday feature - Cosmic Yoga. And share pics here!
